For many patients, a beautiful smile is great, but giving up good food to get there would cause a pause. So, if you get veneers, what does that mean for your favorite foods? Will you have to give up pizza, BBQ, and deli sandwiches? Not quite! Unlike braces, veneers won’t come with a long list of forbidden foods, but that doesn’t mean your diet is entirely unaffected. Here’s how you may have to change your menu once your new smile is in place.
Good News First—Most Foods Are Still on the Menu
Veneers are designed to work just like natural teeth, so you won’t need to overhaul your entire diet. Even coffee, tea, and red wine, which are foods notorious for staining teeth, won’t discolor porcelain veneers as easily as natural enamel.
That said, it’s still a good idea to rinse your mouth or drink through a straw with these beverages. The acid and dark pigments can still affect any exposed enamel around your veneers.
A Few Foods Are Worth Approaching with Caution
While veneers are strong, they’re not indestructible. A handful of foods can increase the risk of chipping or cracking, including hard or chewy candy, popcorn kernels, crusty breads, caramel apples, and nuts.
You don’t have to permanently cut these foods out; just be more mindful about when and how much you enjoy them. Biting directly into something very hard, like ice or a hard bread crust, puts unnecessary stress on a veneer’s edges.
Habits Matter More Than Any Single Food
Beyond specific foods, there are specific habits that can do far more damage over time than an occasional treat. Chewing on pens, biting your nails, or using your teeth to open packaging can all put your veneers at risk.
Bruxism (teeth grinding) is another habit that, if unaddressed, could do real damage to your new smile. Talk to your dentist at your next appointment if you have jaw pain or notice your teeth are chipped or worn down. They can help protect your investment with a nightguard.
As you can see, getting veneers doesn’t mean giving up the foods you love. It just means being a little more thoughtful about the “how” and “how much” when you eat certain things. With good habits and regular checkups, veneers can stay beautiful and functional for well over a decade. If you’re curious whether veneers are the right fit for you, a consultation is the best place to start.
